I made this work in collaboration with Out In The Open to create to publicly affirm that Black Trans people are loved, valued, and belong in rural places. As a white queer person living in a largely white rural context, I recognize that visible signs of support and affirmation are just one tiny piece of the larger project of safety and joy and liberation, and this is one way to use the space and skills I have to contribute toward that project. All of the money generated from this work, after covering materials, will go to Black Trans people’s individual fundraisers, receipts available upon request. Thanks to Out In The Open and all of the community partners that made this project happen!

Shea Witzo (she/her/they/them) is an artist, educator, care worker, and facilitator living in unceded Abenaki territory in so called Southern Vermont. Shea is fat, queer, white, rural, chronically ill, gender expansive, a survivor, and a good dancer. Shea’s performance work, music, visual art, teaching, and facilitation seek to foster cultural change, liberation, justice, accountability, consent, abolitionist world building, growth, learning, embodiment, connection, and solidarity. Shea believes people and barred owls and acorns. Find Shea’s performance collective’s work at theroyalfrogballet.com and send ideas, feedback, or inquiries about collaboration to Shea Witzo.
