JK Adams + CNC Technology

We are so fortunate to be partnering with the nationally-acclaimed Vermont business JK Adams! During the prototyping process it was clear that in order to scale this project the plywood Handy Station base units would need to be designed for easy cutting, flat-packing and shipping. So, I began my search for companies in the area who had CNC (computer numerical control) cutting capacities. Fellow Yestermorrow instructor Ben Weiss helped me with thinking about ease of assembly in the design. He then introduced me to the folks at JK Adams—Sharon Rishell, Charlie Armstrong and Sean Osbourne—known for their wooden product designs. From our very first meeting, we aligned on the public benefit of this project and JK Adams wanted to help make it happen. Charlie Armstrong, lead designer at JK Adams, and I worked over the course of two and a half months to refine the design and process of CNC cutting, sanding, finishing, laser etching and flat-packing the base units.
